After a legendary career of impressively earning 15 world championships throughout four separate weight classes, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr. just might come out of retirement for a second time. Mayweather initially announced his retirement from boxing in June 2008, until former UFC featherweight and lightweight double-champion Conor McGregor got the undivided attention of one of the best fighters to ever step into a boxing ring. The highly-anticipated boxing match then quickly took place on August 26, 2017, resulting in Floyd gaining a well-deserved TKO victory in the 10th round and increasing his undefeated professional record to 50-0.
Fast forward five years and Mayweather is once again contemplating fighting again, against the same opponent. Floyd reportedly confirmed official negotiations to follow through with the rumored rematch between these two super athletes this past Wednesday, September 21, 2022, during an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail – “I am not into fights where I am going to take any real punishment… So, guys like Conor McGregor and guys that don’t really hit hard such as YouTubers or UFC guys, I don’t really mind colliding with those kinds of individuals but nothing where I am going to put myself in a position where I am going to harm myself or hurt myself.”
Some fans have already started to express their concerns about this specific fight due to not only the age difference in Floyd being 45-years-old and McGregor only being 34-years-old, but the rust that might be on the Michigan-born athlete: McGregor’s most recent professional fight was in July 2021, while Mayweather’s final meaningful brawl was against Conor in 2017. As people across the globe sit in suspense on whether or not both sides will come to a mutual agreement on the possible fight, all fans can do is patiently wait to see if the unimaginable rematch will truly unfold.
