The Caribbean Sea coastline country of Honduras was previously led by former President Juan Orlando Hernandez for the past 8 years. Hernandez was initially determined as president back in 2014 before he went on to serve a successful two terms. Recently, Honduras has officially sworn in its first female president Xiomara Castro this past Friday, January 27, 2022, as they look to continue to diversify themselves and create a better environment for their citizens: Castro received 53% of the overall votes to determine who will be the country’s new president.
Conservative presidential candidate and Tegucigalpa Mayor Nasry Asfura gave his public congratulations towards his fellow competitor in a post-election statement that read: “I congratulate her for her victory and as a president-elect, I hope that God illuminates and guides her so that her administration does the best for the benefit of all of us Hondurans, to achieve development and the desire for democracy.” As the runner-up of Honduras’ 2022 presidential election seems to simply be concerned with the future plans that Castro has for the country, he still gave respect where it was due and congratulated his opponent on her historical win.
The United States even took the time to acknowledge the monumental victory that took place overseas this past week. “The United States of America congratulates the people of Honduras on their election and Xiomara Castro on her historic victory as Honduras’ first female president,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced in a public statement. “We look forward to working with the government of Honduras.” A single presidential term lasts for 5 years in Honduras, making it quite interesting to observe how many Castro will choose to stay in office for.
