The 2022 Academy Awards ceremony was filled with surprising moments that will forever go down in history. The most notable being Will Smith walking onto the stage and smacking his fellow actor, Chris Rock, hard across the face. Some people claimed that the action was staged, however as the event continued it was transparent that Smith was truly angry and Chris had no idea he was going to pull that stunt.
Rock was standing center stage as he made a direct hair joke toward Will’s current wife, Jada Pinkett Smith: “I love ya… G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see,” he stated. Jada is presently suffering from a common hair loss diagnosis called alopecia, which is simply the medical term for normal hair loss due to increasing age; she is now 50 years old.
Shortly after the actor’s awkward transaction, Smith went on to win an Oscar for Best Actor in relation to his film King Richard. During his 5 minute acceptance speech, he proceeded to apologize to the academy and everyone else involved with tears in his eyes. “I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees,” he announced to the world. Will Smith did not mention or apologize to Chris Rock at all during his lengthy speech.
Jada previously spoke on her condition through a recent Instagram post that read: “Now at this point, I can only laugh… y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia. Just all of a sudden, one day…it just showed up like that. Now, this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide. So, I thought I’d share it so y’all not asking any questions… Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends… period!”
