For the past week, the Eastern European country of Ukraine has been under the brutal attack of the Russian military. Hundreds of innocent lives have been tragically stolen throughout the midst of the fight, including Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear site which the Russians previously took control of. Despite the rumors of Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, fleeing the country after the initial attack on his country, he recently released a video that showed himself other representatives of the office still in the country and ready to defend it: Zelensky stated, “We do not need a ride, we need ammunition,” in response to United States President Joe Biden’s offer to remove them from Ukraine.

As of late, Zelensky has recently agreed to meet with specific representatives of Russia in an attempt to discuss future arrangements that appease each country. The idea was initially agreed upon by phone call between Zelensky himself, Kremlin ally and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, and anonymous Russian spokespeople. Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova stated, “Our president from the beginning, even before the war started, always was focused on the diplomatic solution. And even after they started the war, he actually called for peace talks all the time. But he always said, ‘we are ready for peace talks, we are not ready to surrender.’”

The president’s office of Ukraine has agreed to keep all missiles, aircraft, and helicopters from leaving the ground during the time of their meeting in order to ensure everything goes over as smoothly as possible. President Biden has implemented specific sanctions against Russia in an attempt to assist Ukraine, but it seems as if that is not having much of an impact. As Zelensky and the people of Ukraine continue to defend their land, people of other countries can only sit back and hope that all the violence will come to an end and not wind up in their homeland.
