UFC 272 officially commenced this past Saturday, March 5, 2022. Held at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, the highly anticipated pay-per-view embodied a handful of must-see fights and monumental endings. However, the sought-after main event between Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington and Jorge Masvidal pleasurably turned out to live up to expectations in being the most significant and overall best matchup of the night. Colby Covington managed to take the win against his former best friend turned arch-rival Jorge Masvidal in a brutal 5-round fight.
Throughout a personal 25-minute match, the two athletes left it all in the octagon as Covington took it upon himself to take control of almost the entire fight. The fight quickly turned into a clear wrestling match by the hands of the 34-year-old winner which transparently aided in his newly added victory; Covington was announced as the winner by unanimous decision at the conclusion of the fifth round. During his postgame interview with Joe Rogan, the number one contender for the welterweight championship took the time to call out Dustin Poirier, who became the first person to KO Conor McGregor back in January 2021.
With this win, Covington has officially propelled himself to earning a new and improved professional fighting record of 17-3-0, compared to Masvidal’s career record of 35-16-0. Even with the 37-year-old fighter having a few years more experience in the ring, the Cuban athlete could not keep up with the wrestling background that came with his highly prepared competitor. Comparing Covington to Masvidal, all three judges declared the American-born fighter as the victor after totaling the final scores of 49-46, 50-44, and 50-45; Both competitors reportedly walked away with a total of approximately $532,000 each.
