The family of John Hilgert, a 14-year-old who tragically died due to the crowd surge at the 2021 Astroworld Festival, has reached a settlement in their lawsuit with Travis Scott and Live Nation. This marks the third family to settle their Astroworld lawsuit outside of court.
The lawsuit arose from the devastating crowd at the 2021 Astroworld Festival, which resulted in the loss of 10 lives and injuries to multiple staff members. The families of Axel Acosta and Brianna Rodriguez, two other festivalgoers who also lost their lives, had previously settled their lawsuits. While these settlements have been reached, both Travis Scott and the festival organizers still face civil suits from other attendees that could potentially amount to millions of dollars in damages.
The settlement comes after a grand jury decided not to press criminal charges against Travis Scott and several festival and security executives in relation to the Astroworld tragedy. A detailed investigation by the Houston Police Department revealed that fans, security staff, and camera operators had attempted to draw attention to the chaotic situation caused by the crowd surge.
In his statement, Travis Scott mentioned that he was informed through his earpiece that he needed to conclude the performance due to the escalating situation, but he was not fully aware of the severity of the incident until after the show had ended.
