For over 15 years, Google has stood tall over its competitors in being the most visited web domain on the internet. However, as of this past Monday, December 27, 2021, the widely used video-focused social networking service officially became the No. 1 most visited site in the world, leaping over their highly ranked oppositions being Facebook and Google. At the conclusion of just last year, the platform was positioned at the No. 7 spot and only showed a few signs of being able to reach the full potential that it currently is at.
“It was on February 17, 2021, that TikTok got the top spot for a day. Back in March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it was after August 10, 2021, that TikTok took the lead on most days,” a representative from Cloudflare publicly stated. The popular app was initially launched back in 2016 and presently sits at the top of the food chain above Microsoft, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Reddit and so many more. The China-based company has quickly expanded its application over the past four, propelling itself from withholding 65 million users at the end of its first full year to a total of 1 billion at the end of 2021.
Most people believe that the unexpected boost in TikTok’s popularity is due to the worldwide COVID-19 outrage that kept most people inside of their homes for weeks, even months at a time. This would obviously send the youth straight to their cellular devices where they explored the different experiences each individual social media app had to offer for their audiences. For about two years the COVID-19 epidemic took over the United States, easily giving TikTok the transparent opportunity to take over as the world’s most popularly used website in 2021, which they successfully did.
