This past Thursday, September 9, 2021, Golden State Warriors’ own Steph Curry and his entrepreneurial wife Ayesha provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local kids residing in the Oakland community. As a part of their charity foundation “Eat. Learn. Play.,” which provides underprivileged children with help in any aspects of their lives that are lacking, the Curry’s arrived at a local East Oakland elementary school in a high fashioned school bus that had been completely customized from the inside and out. “We wanted to make it colorful and have all of the hydraulics and antics to have that feeling like when you were a kid and the ice cream truck would come driving down the street,” Ayesha further explained.
With the outside covered entirely with different shades of blue, pink, and yellow the “Eat. Learn. Play.” bus comes fully equipped with just about everything. The inside withholds a healthy food pantry, basketball hoop, a free library, multiple flat-screen televisions, and even a tricked-out rooftop deck. Ayesha expressed how the number of black and Hispanic students struggling with literacy is a “community issue,” and should not be blamed on easy targets such as parents and the school district. She stated, “Let’s get together, give this model a try and see if we can create some excitement around reading. If we can all join together and try to fix the issue together and turn these numbers around, then I think we are doing something right.” The future of their custom school bus idea looks extremely bright as the two idols look to use it to host sports clinics, health clinics, and even hold live cooking demonstrations from Ayesha herself; she has published various cookbooks in the past such as “The Full Plate” and “The Seasoned Life.” She released a statement to NBC News that read, “The idea came basically from me wanting to find a way to eradicate food deserts within the Oakland area.” The Curry’s are continuing to help underprivileged local children gain the most out of life, while also being inspirational figures for these kids to look up to.
