Fashion and music icon, Rihanna is back after six years of not releasing music with a new solo track called “Lift Me Up.” The song was created specifically for the highly anticipated sequel to the original Black Panther. Rihanna’s last musical release Anti came in 2016, and more recently guest appeared on PartyNextDoor’s song ”Believe It” in 2020.
Tems, a “Lift Me Up” co-writer, shared details prior to the songs release. “After speaking with Ryan [Coogler, director/co-writer] and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life,” Tems stated, that the song is actually a tribute to late Chadwick Boseman. “I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”
