A local prison near the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, Turi prison, was unexpectedly overtaken by a rebellious gang this past Sunday night, April 3, 2022. Reports claim that the inmates took over the authorities after an out of control riot commenced, in which the guards seemingly could not put an end to the situation. Tragically, medical officials have publicized the death of at least 20 people within the walls of the prison, all occurring throughout the riot: The status of inmate or guard was not given with the information on the deceased.
Other inmates who were only witnesses of this specific rebellious act elaborated on how they heard screaming from various cells commencing from Sunday night into Monday morning. Afterwards, officers verified that multiple members of different gangs began attacking each other as innocent guards fell victim to their unnecessary action. Interior Minister Patricio Castillo then went on to announce how Ecuador will proceed to decrease th violence in their country, which will “drain the cesspit (prison),” according to Castillo himself. A similar situation previously took place in Ecuador back in September 2021, which resulted in the unnecessary death of over 300 inmates. The prison was quickly under a state of emergency in which 118 people were brutally murdered by the different types of weaponry such as grenades and automatic firearms.
