As decades pass by and new generations of life continue to sprout, consumption habits of any kind are easily spread throughout families and friends every single day. Making impressive noise out of Summit, New Jersey, Sustainable Haus Mercantile is a small store that sells everyday products; some of the most popular being all forms of soap, ‘reusable replacements for napkins,’ paper towels, laundry detergent, and all types of cleaning products. The store’s main goal is to unnoticeably switch their customers’ everyday habits with one load of laundry, one napkin, and one soap bar at a time.

Owned by Janette Spiezio, Sustainable Haus Mercantile also looks to completely get rid of the overseen “environmental impact” that shipping causes to the customer’s products when ordering from any place of business. Frequent shoppers have caught on and are understanding the reason why Spiezio is running her store this way and actually seem to enjoy the fact they are able to go back and “refill their reusable sunscreen, shampoo, and even detergent bottles while keeping their money within a local small business.” SHM is slowly creating a turning point within all similar companies and is on track to start a worldwide trend of selling purely environmentally friendly products.

Other stores have been taking note of the success that Spiezio has found within her company and are starting to act accordingly, as the small business owner previously said would eventually happen. In June 2020, the monster corporation, Target, released a public statement that they are currently developing a “sustainable strategy” in order to reach their goal of becoming “the market leader for sustainable brands by 2030;” less than a decade away. This specific corporation will also be starting small by displaying “disposable coffee cups and other single-use food/beverage containers” as they switch from their usual products to a more sustainable, green lifestyle. Other big brand stores that have been riding the environmentally friendly wave include Grove Collaborative, Amazon, and even Walmart which have recently begun taking part.
