The family of Jarveon Hudspeth is demanding clarity and seeking answers regarding the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of the 21-year-old by a Shelby County deputy. The incident occurred during a traffic stop and escalated into an altercation, resulting in Hudspeth’s tragic death on June 24. The family is seeking a thorough investigation into the incident to understand the events that unfolded and to obtain justice and accountability for their loved one.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the deputy involved in the incident was conducting an “enforcement action” on a parked car in the Raleigh community of north Memphis. During the encounter, an altercation ensued between the deputy and Jarveon Hudspeth, both of whom were outside Hudspeth’s vehicle at the time. At a certain point, Hudspeth reentered the car and made an attempt to flee the scene. The specific details and sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting are currently under investigation by the TBI to provide a clearer understanding of what transpired.
Following Jarveon Hudspeth’s attempt to flee the scene, the deputy involved in the incident became trapped between the driver’s side door and the car. While in this position, the deputy was dragged approximately 100 yards down the road. In response, the deputy fired a single lethal shot. Hudspeth, who was unconscious during this time, subsequently crashed his vehicle. He was then transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. stated that the deputy is currently in critical condition at Regional One Health Hospital. The incident is being investigated further to gather more information and determine the full sequence of events.
