Everyone around the world was shocked by well-known actor Will Smith’s actions at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. With over 16.6 million live viewers watching from their homes, Smith confidently walked onto the stage and proceeded to smack his fellow star, Chris Rock, in the face for a prior joke he made towards Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Many celebrities have already publicized their opinions on the rough situation, but the one that really grabbed the world’s attention was actor and comedian Jim Carrey, who made multiple statements on the matter in an exclusive interview with CBS Mornings.
Airing this past Tuesday, March 29, 2022, Carrey told Gayle King that if he was in Chris Rocks’ shoes he would have had Will arrested and sued for over $200 million. “I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever,” Carrey announced. “It is going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time.”
He went on to continue his publicly announced opinion: “I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation, I feel like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. And it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we are not the cool club anymore. If you wanna yell from the audience and disapprove, or say something on Twitter or whatever, go ahead… You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
Jim Carrey then claimed that Will is clearly battling something from his past that he has yet to mature past. “It did not escalate,” Carrey said. “It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that is frustrating and I wish him the best, I really do. I do not have anything against Will Smith… He’s done great things, but that was not a good moment.”
