Japanese agencies Honda Motor Company and Sony Corporation are officially partnering to create a new business in the hopes of manufacturing and selling electric vehicles. Recently brought to light on Friday, March 4, 2022, both companies have made it known that they are currently in the beginning stages of the operation and are highly open to accepting newly interested collaborators. They reportedly claimed that they are planning to sell their first car at some point throughout 2025.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida previously released a statement on behalf of their recent partnership: “Sony’s purpose is ‘fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology,’” he said. “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated extensive global experience and achievements in the automobile industry over many years and continues to make revolutionary advancements in this field, we intend to build on our vision to ‘make the mobility space an emotional one,’ and contribute to the evolution of mobility centered around safety, entertainment, and adaptability.”
“The New Company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution, and the expansion of mobility around the world, by taking a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds the expectations and imagination of customers,” Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe announced in a public statement of his own. “We will do so by leveraging Honda’s cutting-edge technology and know-how in relation to the environment and safety while aligning the technological assets of both companies… Although Sony and Honda are companies that share many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of technological expertise are very different. Therefore, I believe this alliance which brings together the strengths of our two companies offers great possibilities for the future of mobility.”
Both businesses have already made it clear that they will only be making electric vehicles in hopes of moving towards the future of the world’s everyday mobility system. However, as the CEOs give their own thoughts and positive opinions on this specific merger, time will only tell if the new corporation that they are forming will be as much of a success as they are currently projecting it to be.
