Multi-platinum selling artist, Drake, recently collaborated with Maryland rapper Brent Faiyaz in their new single entitled “Wasting Time.” The two artists came together to create a beautiful track that shows their similarity in style while also embodying the true music that they were meant to make. Officially releasing the single on July 1, 2021, the track was released to both Brent and Drake’s streaming platforms; we can only assume the Canadian rapper is giving us just a glimpse of his anticipated album, “Certified Lover Boy.”
“Wasting Time” is a five-minute track that begins with a long chorus and verse from Faiyaz while he sheds light on wanting a specific female to “waste time” with him instead of being alone or accompanied by someone else. As a result of taking up most of the time on the single, this would be the message of the song until around the third minute when Drake would finally speak his verse. The 34-year-old rapper takes his normal alpha approach discussing how unspecific females in his life have changed over the years while he has only been physically, mentally, spiritually, and more importantly financially growing past them. What was a short verse from the “Wants and Needs” rapper, he still managed to say enough to hold over his fans until his project, “CLB,” releases this summer.
Both artists recorded over what sounds to be such a versatile beat. Along with beat production by The Neptunes, the song maintains a slow yet soothing tempo while also having a specific violin sound to even things out when the 808 inevitably drops. There are so many little details that went into the making of this beat and it is really shown in the transition from artists. Drake comes in with such a different flow and sound than Faiyaz had set up for the song, but in doing so actually made the track better; showing the versatility of the beat. These two artists combined to create a masterpiece and fans can only hope that they see more collaborations from these two stars in the future.
