Colombia Decriminalizes Abortion Within First 24 Weeks

Previously considered to be a criminal activity, abortion has recently been deciminalized throughout the Republic of Colombia withing the first 24 weeks of the females pregnancy. With this specific news, Colombia now is now officially instilled itself as the latest Latin American country to allow abortion within their district. The current cost to abort a child in the overseas country is approximately $141.00, however it has been reported that a smaller price can usually be found at ‘specialized private facilities’ for about a total of just $45.00. 

Archbishop Jose Luis Rueda publicly stated that the Catholic Church would “continue to proclaim, defend and promote human life from gestation until natural death.” This change was originally introduced by various pro-choice groups, who managed to spread the awareness of abortion as they called the sudden decriminalization act “a historic achievement.” 

Colombia has now joined multiple other countries by allowing abortion to legally take place in the specifc time frame of the first 24 weeks, including mainly Argentina and Mexico. An attorney for Women’s Link Worldwide, who signed the official petition for decriminalization, Mariana Ardila recently stated the following in regards to the newly passed law: “We knew this was not an easy fight, but at some point it had to happen. Of course, while we were hoping for full decriminalization, and we will keep fighting for it, this is an important step forward for us.”
